In this very special year of both the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, make sure you visit Suffolk Open Studio’s Showcase Exhibition to be held from 26 May to 5 June 2012 at Blackthorpe Barn (off the A14 at junction 45). Here you will see paintings, sculpture, jewellery, photography, glass, ceramics, textiles and mosaics. Whatever your interest or preference in the creative arts, there are sure to be many things that will delight you.

This is just a taste of what\’s to come. During the month of June each of the artists open their studios to the public to display their skills, offering demonstrations and an opportunity to see hands on how and where they create their work. Also there’s the chance to purchase something unique. So visit Blackthorpe Barn, where all artwork is for sale. Event: She Lay Down Deep Beneath the Sea – Tracey Emin at Turner Contemporary

Details: Tracey Emin’s first major solo exhibition at Turner Contemporary is conceived specially for Margate, where Emin grew up and which has provided inspiration for many of her most famous art works. The exhibition explores the themes of love, sensuality and romanticism in Emin’s oeuvre, featuring both new and existing works including drawings, monoprints, sculptures and neons. The exhibition’s central themes continue in a display of paintings, sketches and watercolours of erotic subjects by Tracey Emin as well as JMW Turner and Auguste Rodin, whose iconic sculpture The Kiss is on show at Turner Contemporary until 2 September 2012.

Event: ON: A Re-imagining of Blackpool Illuminations

Details: Grundy Art Gallery has commissioned artist Brian Griffiths to respond to the town’s famous Illuminations for their 100 years anniversary. Exploring the idea and uses of light, Griffiths has created an exhibition that will be a unique presentation of a selection of actual or fragments of illuminations from the Blackpool Illuminations department and archive. It will showcase the diversity of lights and the breadth of imagination that takes the viewer effortlessly from ancient Greece to science fiction future, from human-sized teddy bears to gigantic Tiffany lamps.

Details: Matthew Marks announces Thomas Demand, the next exhibition in his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street. This will be the artist’s first one-person exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery. The centerpiece of the exhibition will be a new film, Pacific Sun (2012). Based on a video of a cruise ship caught in a storm between the Republic of Vanuatu and Auckland, New Zealand which the artist found on Youtube, Pacific Sun follows the full narrative arc of the ship’s violent encounter in the Tasman Sea. Seen from the point of view of a security camera in the boat’s café, the film begins with the subtle movement of small items and escalates to a full emergency.

Event: Hiroshi Sugimoto: Five Elements

Details: The “five elements” in this exhibition refer to the earth, water, fire, wind and sky that are believed to make up the substance of this world according to the Buddhist scriptures. During the Heian period in Japan, these five elements became the basis for the form of Buddhist reliquaries. For this exhibition, Sugimoto has created pagoda-shaped reliquary sculptures out of optical glass, which contain self-made films depicting seascapes.

Event: Matisse – Pairs and Sets

Details: Through a selection of masterpieces by the artist, the exhibition “Matisse, pairs and sets” illuminates a singular aspect of his art: the exploration of the same subject repeatedly, the same pattern, which allows the artist to explore the painting itself. Pairs or sets, these ricochets formal variations framework, drawing, touch, color, are a regular features of his work. The exhibition comprises sixty paintings and thirty drawings, to trace his artistic career, from 1899 to 1952. Faced with these couples and these digressions, that’s all the work of Matisse and he is allowed to enter, with its breaks, its reversals and his conquests.
