New Contemporary @ the Art House gallery
Must see paintings
‘HAND STAND’ an exhibition of paintings by Christian Mann
Exhibition on now until Sunday 29th October open every day 11am – 530pm except Monday and Tuesday
At The Art House 140 Lewisham Way New Cross London http://www.lewishamarthouse.co.uk/
Nearest stations – New Cross and New Cross Gate Buses which stop there – 321, 21 , 436 , 171, 172, 136
Presenting Christian Mann – an exciting young painter in London who produces powerfully engaging paintings, each of them born from freakish notes prose and drawings. Christian is 27 years old and has been working in his studio for 5 yeaars . He has been waiting for the right opportunity to unleash his work on the public.
His paintings convey aspects of social issues which are constantly being regergitated by the media, historians, politicians, and yes – artists too. But far from being dated, each painting cries out a sense of ‘happening’. Some paintings contain vortexes of colour which bleed into strange forms . Some look like designed 20th Century propaganda posters – but with a modern twist or tension ‘puppeteered’ by surprising characters acting out poses amidst scenes of chaos. He says – ‘Different cultures will have different understandings about what represents what. Conflicts can derive from misunderstandings of words or symbols and I think a big part of the process behind these works is about helping me to explore the idea that my intentions are not always black or white. The great thing about painting is that you can just let it happen. The problem is when you try to see meaning too much in what you see.’
His work is definately challanging – but what it challanges is constantly being lost and found within a mealstrom of creation.
He says of his working stye ‘I have always felt I have been taking a stand with my work -just by letting it happen. The trouble is I’m never sure what kind of stand I’m making. What I want to convey with each painting is constantly changing – each time I come up with an idea I immediately want to look at it upside down, or back to front, strip it naked, or sometimes avoid it. I push the idea until it has that aura of timeless purpose, so that it cannot be avoided’
You can contact the artist with any questions via email – mailto:smashedplanet@btinternet.com

ArtyBird is a Leicester based City & Guilds approved online learning
centre, offering art & design qualifications. From September this year a
brand new qualification became available through ArtyBird called the
7823 Artist in Residence certificate. The 7823 Artist in Residence
certificate was designed by Deborah Bird for ArtyBird and accredited by
City & Guilds in 2005, we believe that this is the first accredited
course of its kind in the country.

The award consists of seven flexible assignments designed to document
and build ‘artist in residence’ activity, including 5 proposals and two
‘live’ projects. All course work is submitted and assessed by email,
making it possible to study towards the qualification at your own pace
from your own studio or home. You will be given a personal tutor and a
CD-Rom containing an Artist in Residence ‘tool kit’.

Projects can include the following type of activity – demonstration,
workshop, field trip, artist talk and /or a body of location-based work
(permanent or temporary).

Students will have access to electronic portfolio building and a global
database for qualified ‘artists in residence’. Inclusion in the ArtyBird
database will be dependant on successful completion of the award
together with recent CRB checks, this can be organised for an additional
fee through ArtyBird. The ArtyBird Artist in Residence database facility
will be available from September 2007.

David Hockney.

As part of the nationwide event The Big Draw, Modern Art Oxford is inviting
for visitors of all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The Big Draw is a nationwide event organised by the Campaign for Drawing, which

24London, an exciting opportunity for London based artists

Visit London are creating a unique exhibition of London which will tour to 3
European cities called 24London, a 24 hour exhibition in each city showcasing 24
London artist’s views of London through a variety of mediums.

As one of the most loved, most vibrant, most diverse cities in the world London
has a lot to offer and we feel there is certainly enough art out there to showcase
just how much of an incredible place it is.

Therefore we are looking for 24 artists who are interested in exhibiting their
work all over Europe in a highly PR driven campaign to promote this great
metropolitan city.

We would love to contact London based artists who’s work showcases London in a
positive manor to promote the city as a great world class destination.

Since the exhibition will begin in early November we are not looking for artists
to commission work but simply lend an existing item of their work, which is
related to London, to the exhibition.

Please note that there will be no fee for the chosen artist/s but we will cover
the cost of all aspects of the exhibition.

If you are interested in this opportunity please email us with some brief
information about yourself and 1 or 2 examples of the work you wish to submit.

mailto:jordanw@smlevents.com or, mailto:sarahe@smlevents.com

Kind Regards,

Jordan Wilson

Visions from the Western Sahara – exhibition highlights unknown lives of
Saharawi people as part of the Mayors Black History Season

An exhibition of photography taken by the Saharawi people of the Western
Sahara, a refugee community is being displayed at City Hall, SE1, throughout
the month of October, as part of the Mayor of London’s Black History Season
celebrations. The exhibition is organised by Sandblast.

Sandblast is dedicated to raising awareness through the arts about the
Saharawi people of Western Sahara and their struggle for self-determination.
Close to 200,000 Saharawis have been refugees in the SW Algerian desert for
over 30 years while tens of thousands more live under a repressive occupying
regime in their homeland.

Mayor Ken Livingstone said: ‘Black History Season continues to be an
important period of reflection, development and learning for all Londoners.
The Sandblast exhibition is a welcome addition to the expanded programme of
events and promises to be an enlightening look at the lives of the
Saharwarian people, whose very existence many Londoners may be largely
unaware of.’

Danielle Smith, founding director of Sandblast said: ‘The Saharawis were
given digital cameras and encouraged to take pictures that would send a
message to the outside world about life in the camps and the issues they
face. The project took place shortly after the camps had been hit by
torrential storms, which left fifty thousand people homeless.’

Some of the (first time) photographers chose to document this destruction,
whilst others photographed the defiant celebrations that marked thirty years
of SADR as a state in exile. Other participants looked at the daily lives of
children or the pain of families who had lost relatives in the war.

‘The Sora Project’ in association with Sandblast aims to give young Saharawi
refugees a voice through photography. The images shown in this exhibition
were taken by Omar Dih Bebih, Hadjtna Mohamed Deidi, Hasina Bachir Mohamed,
Amere Abd Samed, Najla Mohamed Lamin Salma, Galia Sidahmed Blaila and Sanea
Muhamed Azat,

The Mayor has supported an extensive programme of arts, culture and
educational events in celebration of London’s Black History. Events take
place across the capital from October 2006, culminating in March 2007

Jamie Shovlin: Aggregate at ArtSway: Free Coach from Tate Britain

Jamie Shovlin’s exciting new show opens at ArtSway on Saturday 14 October 2006.

ArtSway has provided a free coach to the gallery in Sway, in the New Forest, near
Lymington, for the opening reception. We would be delighted to welcome visitors
from London to the gallery for the day, or visitors from further afield, nationally
and internationally, that may like to combine a trip to this exhibtion with a
visit to the Frieze Art Fair.

Shovlin is an Internationally recognised artist, who has recently exhibited at
Beck’s Futures 2006 and Tate Britain, in the Art Now space. ‘Aggregate’, the
artist’s latest exhibition, explores the boundaries between scientific systems of
understanding, and seemingly insignificant hobbies such as birdwatching and
jigsaw puzzle making – favourite pastimes of the artit’s mother.

The coach leaves from outside Tate Britain at 11:30 on Saturday 14 October 2006,
and will return to London for the early evening. A light lunch and drinks will be
provided. The coach is free, but booking is essential. Please contact Laura
McLean-Ferris on 01590 682260 x 16 or email mailto:laura@artsway.org.uk

The exhibition will continue until 26 November 2006.
