Clare Skinner’s light installations were the focus of a recent ‘Spotlight’ interview with The Artists Web.  On Thursday 16th April, Clare transformed a beach in Thorpe Bay with over 1,000 LED lights and created a magical and contemplative environment.  The Artists Web caught up with Clare to see how the evening went, how people responded and what she has up her sleeve next!

It was really successful night; there was a great number of people throughout the evening, many unaware of what was going on and curious to explore the installation. Some were out for an evening walk and came down to the beach to inquire further, others had seen the fliers and advertising and were intrigued at what I would be doing this time around.

It became a place to meet people, discuss and debate as well as a special place to stand and contemplate.  All the comments I heard were really positive, expressing a fascination and changed perspective of the way they viewed the seafront at night.  Some walked through the lines of light absorbed by what was going on -  others watched from the beach huts with friends.  Light has this ability to encourage people to reflect on their environment and re-see what can be so often ignored.  It allows people to be in that moment.

I started to place the lights out at 5.40pm and continued until 9.30pm, using over a 1000 LEDs with each line stretching over a few hundred yards. The installation was documented by photographs and film which will be on YouTube soon and I am already planning my next installation in June. This will be in-conjunction with the Leigh Art Trail (13th-20th June) where I will be setting up an installation on the beach down in Old Leigh.’
