North East artists embrace Christian Aid
Several high profile artists from the North East have joined forces with Christian
Aid to hold an exhibition in Newcastle that will raise awareness and funds for
people living with HIV.
ArtAid: Embrace at The Art Works Galleries in the Ouseburn on 24-25 November 2006
will feature around 65 works by North East artists including Mary Ann Rogers,
Peter Flanagan and Enrique Azocar. There will be a public auction on the evening
of the 25th to raise money for Christian Aid’s HIV partner organisations in
Africa. Also on show, and for auction, will be the four sculptures made from
decommissioned guns for the BBC Ground Force Africa Garden and several works by
Matt Forster of The Art Works Galleries.
This is a very exciting event for Christian Aid in the North East’, said Kerry
Crellin, regional co-ordinator, who was inspired to set up the exhibition when
Chilean artist Enrique Azocar was her Spanish teacher at the Hexham campus of
Newcastle College.
“We hope to develop the project into next year with creative spin-offs in youth
and schools work and artists’ exchange visits between southern Africa and North
East England.”
Enrique created a new piece of work especially for the exhibition which he
described as much brighter than his usual work.
“I used bold colours and tried to create a lighter image than normal, because
Christian Aid is bringing light where there is not any. Being involved with
Christian Aid is important to me as they support those in need regardless of
creed. It is fascinating to make links with another culture while helping people
living with HIV in Africa through my art.”
