Atlantic Basin Project E-Publication
Call for Submissions

October 2, 2006

The Independent Artists Cooperative is a Newfoundland, Canada based artists
cooperative comprised of artists working in different disciplines –
primarily music and recording, the performing arts, new media and graphic
art. Please see:

http://www.independentartistscooperative.com
http://www.rockcanrollrecords.com

We have just launched a new web-based initiative The Atlantic Basin Project
and we are calling for submissions for our first edition. The Atlantic Basin
Project is an e-publication of contemporary arts practice focusing on
coastal communities in the Atlantic Basin. This project grew from a desire
to create a place for discourse, a free space for the exchange of ideas, a
meeting point for diverse arts communities and a venue to show artist’s work
in an international context. We are also interested in exploring the
similarities and differences between communities working in coastal regions.

The Atlantic Basin Project has broad parameters. The first edition will be
an e-publication of the arts encompassing Contemporary Practice, New Media,
Inter-disciplinarity and New Music. The online journal will accept
submissions from artists in communities throughout the Atlantic Basin and
from any other coastal community. The theme for the first edition is
“Mapping The Edge – Shifting Practice, Transforming Community”. We are
calling for submissions of work that intersect with our theme in any way. We
will accept work from artists in:

* visual artwork in any media
* new music
* webart
* writing, both critical and creative
* discussion on new music and art forms
* streamed audio and performance
* reviews
* essays and articles reflecting contemporary arts practice

We prefer e-mail submissions. Please send us an inquiry before making a
submission to indieartscoop@hotmail.com We will answer all inquiries
promptly. Deadline for submitting to the first edition is January 15, 2007.
All artists chosen for the e-publication will be paid a fee for the
presentation of their work. It will be our tendency to accept submissions.

We hope that new relationships will form as a result of this project,
creating opportunities for exchange and collaboration. We are also very open
to any and all suggestions and are looking for partners to work with. If you
are interested in finding out more about us or this project please email us

Corinthia, or The Origin of Painting – London

October 8th, 2006 by admin

Corinthia, or The Origin of Painting

“Inspir’d by Love, the soft Corinthian Maid, her
graceful lover’s sleeping form portray’d” – William
Hayley “An Essay on Painting” 1778

“The Origin of Painting” by Disinformation -
Electromagnetic sound, shadow and live interactive
grafitti installation

Myatt’s Fields Park
Camberwell
London SE5
Fri 20 Oct 2006
6.30 to 8.30
Admission Free

“The Origin of Painting” was first exhibited (under a
different title) at The Hayward Gallery in the “Sonic
Boom” exhibition in Jan 2000, and (under the present
tile) at Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst
(Amsterdam), Fabrica (Brighton), CCCB (Barcelona), The
Huddersfield Art Gallery, The Mac (Birmingham), Quay
Arts (Isle of Wight), The Ashcroft Centre (Fareham), Q
Arts (Derby), The Brunswick Centre housing estate
(London), South Hill Park (Bracknell), as part of the
Wembley Public Arts Strategy (London), in a disused
railway tunnel under Sydenham Hill Woods (London), and
at an MTV Awards party at Palau Sant Jordi (the
Olympic Stadium in Barcelona).

“The Origin of Painting” installation is created in
homage to “The Corinthian Maid, or The Origin of
Painting” by Joseph Wright (Wright of Derby) 1785, and
appears as part of the “Light It” festival – also
featuring The Barefoot Company, Circus Space, Poulomi
Desai, Sofie Layton, Mandinga Arts, Howard Matthew and
Ali Zaidi. “Light It” is organised by Moti Roti and
Home Gallery, and supported by The Arts Council,
Lambeth Arts and The Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

“The Origin of Painting” functions as a contemporary
interactive vanitas painting, as Sci-Fi author Jeff
Noon wrote in The Independent – “people are fascinated
by this work, it brings a shiver, a sudden recognition
of death, as if we have seen or heard our own ghost”.

The Metro described “The Origin of Painting” as
“visually stunning” and “daunting yet engaging”, The
Financial Times described it as “actively thrilling”,
and The Guardian wrote that “Disinformation combine
scientific nous with poetic lyricism to create some of
the most beautiful installations around”.
